The human body often sends quiet signals before something more obvious appears. Not every warning arrives as pain, fatigue, or a dramatic symptom. Sometimes, the first signs show up in small details we barely notice — including the surface of our fingernails.
Many people eventually look down and notice lines, ridges, or stripes on their nails. At first, these markings may seem like a simple cosmetic issue or the result of hitting a nail against something. In many cases, they are harmless. But sometimes, changes in the nails can reflect what is happening inside the body.
One of the most important details is the direction of the lines.
Vertical ridges are the most common. These lines usually run from the cuticle to the tip of the nail, like tiny raised tracks. For many people, vertical ridges become more noticeable with age. Just as the skin develops fine lines over time, nails can also become drier, thinner, or more textured as the years pass.
However, age is not the only possible cause. If vertical ridges appear suddenly or are accompanied by brittle nails, splitting, or weakness, they may be connected to nutrition or hydration. Low levels of certain nutrients, such as iron, magnesium, protein, or other essential vitamins and minerals, may affect the strength and smoothness of the nail.
Horizontal lines can be more concerning.
