The Table She Was Never Supposed too Leaven. 009

The first sound Private Lena Mercer registered was not the laughter.

It was the shriek of metal dragging across tile.

Specialist Derek Vaughn slammed the sole of his boot against the leg of the table beside her with enough force to send the entire thing sideways. Lena’s lunch tray bounced violently, tipped over, and crashed down. Water spilled across the edge. Mashed potatoes splattered onto the floor. A plastic cup spun underneath another table.

Her chair went over with her.

Her shoulder struck the floor hard enough to send a sharp burst of pain down her arm.

For half a second, the mess hall at Fort Halbrook became completely still.

Then somebody laughed.

A second soldier joined in.

Then several others.

Within moments, the scene had become exactly what Vaughn had intended from the beginning: a show.

He stood over Lena with his arms relaxed at his sides and a smug smile across his face, taking in the attention as if the entire room existed for his benefit.

“Looks like you picked the wrong table, sweetheart.”

The laughter grew louder.

Several soldiers pulled out their phones.

Lena stayed where she was.

Her left palm remained pressed against the tile. Her chair lay overturned behind her. Water and food surrounded one knee of her camouflage uniform.

But her right hand remained tightly clenched.

Vaughn saw it.

He leaned closer.

“What have you got in there?”

Lena did not answer.

His grin widened.

“What are you gonna do? Throw a fork at me?”

More laughter rolled through the room.

Near the drink station, someone muttered, “Man, just leave her alone.”

But no one stepped forward.

Vaughn looked around with the satisfied confidence of a man who believed the room belonged to him.

Later, that was what Lena would remember most clearly.

Not the table sliding.

Not the impact against the floor.

Not even the laughter.

It was the absolute certainty on Vaughn’s face.

The certainty that nobody would interfere.

The certainty that humiliation belonged to whoever lacked the power to stop it.
