Taylor Swift reveals her racy side while Miley Cyrus covers up for once (but shameless Amber Rose outdoes them all) as the stars descend on the MTV Video Music Awards red carpet

One is the girl next door, know for her vintage preppy style, while the other likes to shock at every available opportunity.

But Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift seemed to have switched stylists for once as they wowed in surprising fashion choices on the MTV Video Music Awards red carpet.

While Miley covered up in a high-waisted pair of leather trousers- albeit teamed with a crop top – Taylor was altogether more provocative.

Taking a leaf out of Miley’s usual dress-to-shock rulebook, she chose a daringly high-cut playsuit by designer Mary Katrantzou that revealed every inch of her long, perfectly toned legs.

But Amber Rose outdid them both in her outfit – a series of chains that could barely be called a dress.

Amber’s Laura Dewitt creation was inspired by the infamous chain-link mesh get-up that Rose McGowan wore at the 1998 MTV VMAs.

The MTV Video Music Awards is known for being the most unpredictable of all the awards shows, and some of the ensembles fell into that description too as Jennifer Lopez, Kesha, Kim Kardashian and her sisters Kendall and Kylie, Gwen Stefani and many others glided down the arrivals line.

Shimmery materials sewn with tiny crystals, sheer and mesh detailing and short-cropped tops paired with figure-flattering skirts abounded, with black, white, silver and gold appearing to be the colours of choice favoured by this starry crowd although red turned up in riveting display as well.

Jennifer Lopez sizzled in a silver-tinted gown that featured a crisscrossing bodice that showed off her flat tummy and a thigh-baring slit in the trailing skirt.

The invincible entertainer glowed golden beneath the summer sun, showing that life is going well for her.

 

 

 

Kesha amazed in a plunging crystal-studded gown accentuated by her green-and-yellow streaked locks.

Kim Kardashian defied gravity – almost – in a cleavage-baring geometric-patterned number that, coincidentally, mirrored the dress worn by Joan Smalls. Joan, however, covered up her front side.

Lucy Hale was a sight to see in her short black top and flaring black and light-flowered skirt, which she matched with neutral heels and the smallest of clutches.

Television personality Poppy Jamie delighted in a black lace and amethyst frock, while Rocsi Diaz and Bianca A. Santos wore golden dresses that captured the light beautifully.

Gwen Stefani was a bright and attractive sight in a black-trimmed, hot pink corset top and matching trousers, and a slim black band accentuated her slender waist.

Jessie J. wowed the crowd in her flowing, buttery yellow Halston gown that moved as she moved.

Sarah Hyland was a stand-out in her dreamy blue creation that featured an angled top and matching skirt with leg-baring slit.

 

Dark and dramatic: Actress Alexandra Shipp wore a daringly sheer and black embroidered gown while Becky G showed off her midriff and Ali Fedotowsky went with a slinky black gown featuring heavy decor

Julianne Hough put her dancing shoes aside to don a loosely fitting, halterneck gown with pleating throughout.

There were many other gowns that dazzled as the stars continued to swamp the red carpet with Demi Lovato looking ravishing in a plunging red gown and leg-baring skirt.

Nicki Minaj had that wild thing air about her as she sashayed down the carpet in an animal print mini-dress that covered up the top half of her figure while showing off her shapely legs.

Jordin Sparks sparked attention in a snowy white dress with deep-cut cleavage and a clingy fit throughout as she posed on the carpet.

Kim Kardashian, who was presenting at the ceremony and was of course supporting her husband Kanye West, suffered a possible embarrassment when she showed up on the red carpet wearing a dress that mirrored the one worn by model Joan Smalls.

Except Kim’s was racy with a deep-cut neckline that dropped all the way to her waist, while Joan modestly covered up.

 

Contrast: Uzo Aduba went classy in a retro-style black dress while Jordin Sparks sparkled in white and Chanel Iman captivated in a futuristic black frock

 

 

Riveting in red: Bailey Buntain, Rita Ora, Demi Lovato and Cher Lloyd heated up the carpet in their gloriously red dresses

Beyonce was a queen ‘B’ in her see-through black gown that consisted of webbed lace and vertical strips of solid material placed here and there.

Mrs. Carter soaked up the attention like a professional before heading to the show where, no doubt, her other half, Jay Z, awaited.

Katie Perry and Riff Raff posed arm-in-arm in matching denim that may have earned her a few grimaces.

Five Seconds Summer spoke to MailOonline on the red carpet about their album which debuted at number one.

‘It is amazing that our first album ever went number one in the us. It’s more than any artist and band  could expect,’ Michael Clifford told MailOnline.

Ashton Irwin commented on their success since moving to the US: ‘I think the best thing about our fans is that they are from all over the place so we don’t stay in one place for very  long.’

Calum Hood had some plans backstage at the show too, telling MailOnline that he wanted to chat up ‘Chris brown. I’ve been practicing my lines.’

The pair hugged and then Angel introduced Mary to Ireland who fussed over her revealing dress and looked uncomfortable.

British pop singer Charli XCX wore a yellow tiger-print leotard Sunday to the MTV Video Music Awards, saying: ‘I feel sexy in it. I think my spirit animal is probably a tiger.’

Adam Levine walked the red carpet with new wife Behati Prinsloo – and for the first time since tying the knot.

Ariana Grande easily turned heads in her black leather mini-dress and thigh-high black leather boots, with her hair pulled up 1960s-style.

 

Aussie singer Iggy Azalea was a pretty sight with her slick long hairdo and strapless, intricately detailed number that was a lighter version of sea foam green.

Faking It star Katie Stevens went with an all-white lace gown that was so sheer her underclothes could be detected underneath, but she wasn’t shy as she posed with co-stars Rita Volk – in an even skimpier lace dress – and red leather-clad Bailey Buntain. The guys were equally eye-catching with Usher leading the pack in a suave white shirt and black trousers.

Sam Smith opted for a more romantic looking dark suit and white shirt, while rocker Ed Sheeran preferred to keep things rocker cool in comfy shirt and black jeans.

Fashion designer Jeremy Scott thrilled in a canary-yellow suit with black lapels and black waistband.

Nick Jonas attracted in a navy and black plaid blazer teamed with black trousers.
