“The Coat He Left Me”

I couldn’t stand my uncle growing up. He was cold, distant, and always seemed to enjoy making others uncomfortable.

But when he got cancer, something in me changed. While his own children stayed away, I was the only one who visited him. He rarely spoke, just held an old photo of his kids until the day he passed.

At the will reading, his children split $40,000 four ways. I got his old coat. They laughed, calling it his “final prank.” Hurt but curious, I slipped my hand into the pocket.

Inside, I felt something thick—an envelope. My heart pounded as I pulled it out. It wasn’t money, but a handwritten letter addressed to me. In it, he thanked me for being there when no one else was—and revealed a bank account, left solely in my name.
