Silent Danger In Her Hands

In 2012, model Lauren Wasser developed toxic shock syndrome, a rare, life-threatening illness associated with toxin-producing bacteria. Her case was linked to tampon use. She survived, but severe tissue damage led to the amputation of her right leg. Persistent complications eventually resulted in the loss of her left leg in 2018. Behind those medical milestones were years of pain, recovery, and the work of rebuilding a life that had changed abruptly.

Wasser returned to modeling with distinctive gold-colored prosthetic legs and became an advocate for greater awareness of menstrual-product risks. Her experience does not mean every tampon user faces the same outcome: toxic shock syndrome is rare, though it can progress rapidly and requires urgent treatment. Sudden fever, vomiting, rash, or dizziness during tampon use warrant immediate medical attention. By speaking publicly, Wasser has made an intensely personal ordeal part of a broader conversation about information, safety, and being heard.
