Why seniors should keep their socks on even at home

Many older adults take their socks off at home for comfort, but doctors say keeping them on may actually help protect their health. As people age, circulation often slows down, making feet colder and more sensitive. Warm socks can help maintain body temperature, improve comfort, and reduce stiffness in the feet and ankles.

There’s also a safety reason. Seniors often have thinner skin and reduced sensation in their feet, especially those with diabetes or circulation problems. Walking barefoot increases the risk of cuts, scrapes, and painful injuries that may heal slowly. Non-slip socks can also help prevent dangerous falls on smooth floors.

Experts say socks made from soft, breathable materials are best, especially pairs designed to reduce pressure and improve grip. While it may seem like a small habit, simply keeping socks on at home can support comfort, warmth, and everyday safety for older adults.
